Welcome to Gunks.net

The Shawangunks of New York is one of the earliest rock climbing areas in the United States. It has been a training ground for larger adventures and a destination in its own right for both everyday climbers and those at the cutting edge.

The stories in these pages will be interesting on their own but might someday serve as building blocks for a larger work about, as the subtitle says, the history, culture, and personalities that have helped shape American climbing for nearly a century.

Your comments, ideas, and contributions — or questions! — are welcomed.

The website is free to all, but subscribe anyway! I’m still at the early research stage, but expect to crank out a few articles soon.

New York's Shawangunks is one of the oldest and most storied rock climbing areas in the United States. This site is devoted to telling those stories. If you're seeing this page, you're not a subscriber, which is fine — just hit the "No thanks."
